About the novel

The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men that were of old, the men of renown. Genisis 6:4

'Nephilim: translated from Hebrew the term means 'fallen ones' or 'those cast down to Earth'. Or 'men who literally came down to earth'.

Before joining the Iconoclasts Hank Foster couldn't envision a life beyond his tragic past. His career as an elite Special Forces Operative was cut short with the loss of his leg. Anger and pain was all he owned. But now the Iconoclasts have brought his anger into focus. Now Hank's anger will move mountains and destroy entire worlds.

Iconoclasts or 'idol destroyers' is the name loosely given to the clandestine organization dedicated to attacking religious institutions. Secretive and immensely powerful, the movement has laid plans to topple the one institution it holds responsible for the greater part of Man's in humanity… they have set out to destroy faith itself.

Hank Foster was targeted through his association with William Kemp, the shining example of a young Icon loyalist, and was recruited because of his talents as a Psychological Warrior and comfort with covert operations. Initially reluctant and cynical, Hank's attitude shifts and he finds the Iconoclast leadership moves too slow for his liking. He usurps the vast power of the Icon leadership and uses their influence to perpetrate an elaborate hoax. He hopes his hoax will be the catalyst for change, but he has no idea how far his deception will spread. With help from the Iconoclasts Hank stages a spectacular UFO sighting over San Francisco, and orchestrates the media frenzy which follows. Ultimately a single question moves lips around the world; what do we believe, and why?

Hank's deception succeeds beyond of his wildest dreams, and sets into motion a chain of events, which ultimately lead to a confrontation between humanity and real extraterrestrials. Humanity is forced to redefine itself under the immense pressure of this new reality, and a new paradigm of understanding is realized.

What is a paradigm? Largely a scientific or philosophical term, a paradigm is a set of assumptions, concepts and values that constitute a way of viewing reality for the community that shares them. In simpler terms, it is a way to define the world around us.
The movement from one paradigm to another is called a paradigm shift. A shift may occur slowly over many years, or it might occur abruptly as the result of conscious analysis and evaluation of the current paradigm. One example of this would be the Copernican revolution. The old paradigm held that the Earth was the center of God's perfect creation. With the realization the Earth revolved around the sun and was not the center of the universe, the prevailing view of the World reluctantly changed. Galileo's discovery of further flaws in the established beliefs eventually lead to a shift of ideas and sparked a revolution in thinking.
A few of the major paradigm shifts in Human understanding can trace their roots to a handful of forward thinking people, but the greatest 'Paradigm Shift' of all can trace its beginnings to one unlikely man, Hank Foster, a bitter, one legged, former Delta Force soldier with a grudge against God.

On its exterior 'Paradigm Shift' engages the reader with a visual, action-packed, Hollywood styled blockbuster, but on a deeper, psychological level, the reader is taken along the hero's mythic journey to ultimately confront the true nature of humanity. The plot is constructed upon the framework of Greek mythology, where by the protagonist follows his fate along the thread of global turmoil and alien invasion. The monomyth formula gives the structure needed to fully expound on the themes of humanity, religion, and existentialism. Emphasis has been shifted from the technology defining most science fiction, to the theological questions raised by contact with life outside our own. The hero's actions and discoveries guide the reader into questioning long established beliefs, and examining new possibilities. The polemic arguments attack the current paradigm of understanding with a broad spectrum of evidence and theory. From Renaissance era paintings depicting flying saucers, and Biblical scripture describing aliens as angels, to careful analysis of the psychology and history behind our current beliefs, 'Paradigm Shift, Return of the Angels' weaves together a story of great depth and meaning.
